A day in the life of . . .

A humorous ( with heaps of reality ) view of a day in the life of an award program or maybe any web site owner.

6.30 a.m - Just had to leave my warm bed early - so much to do. Now where on my desk is the . . . Ah - here it is - my work list. Web site is not right - applicants are waiting, new pages to create, assessors to assist, spam mail to sort, computer to maintain - the list appears endless.

7.00 a.m - Have my first coffee of the day as I sort through the email. Oh no! I should never have looked at that interesting email - now the PC is virus infected! Why does this have to happen today? I just KNEW I should never have left my bed! That will teach me not to get myself a decent virus checker!

8.15 a.m - Now that the viral problem is sorted I can relax ( I think! ) and get on with all the other items on my list. Hang about! I KNOW for sure there was a page online that is not quite right - now which one was it? I really should correct that first - reckon I will go take a look and then I will complete the list.

8.47 a.m - Bother! Wish I knew just where that page problem was. So many pages to check through. It's my own fault - should have written the error down when I first saw it or more efficiently corrected it on sight!

8.53 a.m - Found it! One list item gone - this is real progress! I can get on now with no further interruptions I hope.

9.21 a.m - This is going well - 6 new applicants - all listed and contacted with pages on web site updated.

9.30 a.m - With a new coffee I am ready to . . . oh oh - this is not so good. Email from a past applicant not happy because they did not achieve an award. Just as well items like this are rare.

10.01 a.m - Back to my list - been here nearly three hours and achieved little. What happened to time management?

10.45 a.m - Making real progress - should be finished by early afternoon.

10.52 a.m - Blue screen of death. Why now? Why me? Why at all!!

4.17 p.m - There are times when computers belong to the most loathed and despised group of technological advances on the planet and this is one of them. My well laid out plans for the day have been shot to pieces and there is now no way I can complete all I had planned for the day. I knew I had forgotten something - lunch! New applicants arrive - must be listed on web site.

6.03 p.m - Whew! Finally contacted the last applicant for today and updated the web site. I am coming to the conclusion that lists are of little use!

6.15 p.m - Friend sends an email seeking some help - this problem is going to take some time - still, a friend is a friend and the rest of my list can wait until tomorrow - can't it?

9.47 p.m - I truly cannot believe it! I have been here for over 15 hours and still have not completed my list for the day. What happened to my skills in time management? Where did my lunch and dinner go to because I can't remember having them? Why do I do all this anyway?

Maybe - just maybe, I actually gain some satisfaction out of helping my friends, providing new web pages for visitors to view, setting up applicants and so on and I know for sure that when I finally manage to beat that darn PC blue screen of death, I breathe a large sigh knowing that I have won that horrible battle once again. Would I give all this up for sitting in my armchair reading the daily newspaper? NEVER!
