Can't update Windows XP - SP2?

Had any problems with Windows ( SP2 ) and not being able to update? This may be your solution.

Step 1. Step 1. Ensure you have the 3 files wudmgr, wuauclt and wuauclt1 in your PC Windows/System32 folder and that Updates is turned on in your Services.

Step 2. Step 2. Simply re-registering the MSXML3.DLL seems to fix the problem. ( This step worked for me. )

  • a. Click Start.
  • b. Choose Run.
  • c. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL then press okay.
  • d. Reboot PC and check at the Windows Update site to see if this has worked.

Step 3. Step 3. If Step 2 has not helped you may need to re-register some more files:

  • a. Click Start.
  • b. Choose Run.
  • c. In the Run box, type ( pressing okay after each one ):
  • net stop wuauserv - then repeat for the following:
  • regsvr32 wuapi.dll
  • regsvr32 wups.dll
  • regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
  • regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
  • regsvr32 wucltui.dll
  • regsvr32 wuweb.dll
  • regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
  • regsvr32 qmgr.dll
  • regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
  • regsvr32 jscript.dll
  • net start wuauserv
  • Reboot PC and check at the Windows Update site to see if this has worked.
